Sometimes I Wonder

Ants... Do they wonder if we appreciate how far and fast we can walk with ease? We can walk three blocks in a matter of minutes, a hike that would take an ant ... hours?

Question Marks... I once wondered how many people were typing a question mark at the same time around the world. Is this something I would be curious about after I have reached heavenly bliss? Would it be revealed to me that at 12:12 a.m. Eastern, 57 people hit the "?" key at precisely the same instant?

Everything Starting At Once... One time, I thought it would be interesting to see what would happen if every vehicle on earth started moving, at once, in the opposite direction of the earth's revolution. Would this affect the length of the day, by however slight the amount?

Pencils... I wonder if people ever believed the line in a song, "Pencils come from Pennsyl-vania." They really do; the Eberhard Pencil Company is just up the hill from us. Or, used to be until it moved to Mexico. Eberhard "Tim" Faber Jr. still lives in the area.

Old Ladies, Boys and Dogs... Would you become afraid if you found yourself in the presence of a good-looking guy and gal, an old lady, a boy and a dog? I would. That seems to be the make-up for disaster films. I'd be a little bit fearful that something dreadful was about to happen.

Life On Other Planets... I wonder how many places are out there, wondering if life exists on other planets, with their churches solemnly issuing proclamations based on their holy books.

If you would like to comment... It's easy. Just click on where it gives the number of comments, down at the bottom under this paragraph. You will see your message off to the left bottom; if it's ok, then click "publish" (or whatever it says) and you're in.

Let me make a correction to the "Pencils" entry. I said:

Should be "Eberhard Faber pencil company." We've all used these and I bet you've got a few hanging around the house. They came from Mountaintop PA, just up the hill from Wilkes-Barre.

Actually, to go off-topic a bit, there really is no such place as Mountaintop (or, as people are now starting to spell it, Mountain Top). It exists only as a tiny Post Office building, a ZIP Code and a mailing address. You live in one of several townships or a school district (probably actually in a township, but best known as the school district; go figure), but collectively known as Mountaintop. Even the part which is actually in Hanover Township.

We can't explain it, but we know it.

Some personal trivia, Tom. Auntie Helen worked for many years at Eberhard Faber in the Crestwood industrial park, and she lived in the former original Mountaintop Post Office, which was owned by Grandpa. I loved her and her house. I wonder why we are now attempting to spell Mountaintop as Mountain Top? Seems silly and very unromantic....

In the fairly recent past, there was a big to-do about the exact spelling of the place's name. Apparently, person or persons unknown had too much time on their hands. Anyway, these people pointed out that the ancient spelling was "Mountain Top," even though exclusive usage in anyone's memory has been "Mountaintop." PennDOT said, "You tell us how you want the letters on our signs, and we'll do it." The purists won out legally, but I think the residents still use the accustomed way.

In a related matter, we have not gone to changing "Back Mountain" to its original "Back Of The Mountain" name, nor "Trucksville" to its maiden name of "Truxville."
